Sales Engineer – Vessels & Nutsches
Location: Saukville, WI (Greater Milwaukee Area)

The company provides lab scale, pilot plant, and production scale equipment for various industries, including pharmaceuticals, fine specialty chemicals, foods, flavors, polymers, and many others. Pope Scientific serves diverse sectors by offering solutions for demanding processes such as reactions, filtering, and other operations.
Position Summary:
Pope Scientific is seeking a technically proficient and results-driven Sales Engineer to lead the growth and management of our Nutsche Filter, Vessel, and Mixer product lines. This individual serves as the critical technical link between our customers’ complex process requirements and our internal engineering and production teams.
The Sales Engineer is responsible for the entire project lifecycle—from initial technical consultation and conceptual design to final equipment delivery and customer satisfaction.
Core Responsibilities & Role Impact
Technical Consultation and Proposal Development:
The Sales Engineer acts as a primary technical advisor to potential clients, ensuring that every inquiry receives a comprehensive and accurate response.
- Performs technical reviews of customer inquiries to clarify project scope, design specifications, and process requirements.
- Develops detailed Bills of Materials (BOM) and costing sheets for standard, customized, and turnkey systems.
- Collaborates with the Director of Sales to construct and present formal budgetary and technical quotations, ensuring alignment with company pricing and approval protocols.
- Facilitates technical presentations and face-to-face project discussions to secure high-value contracts.
Project Lifecycle & Cross-Functional Leadership:
A key component of this role is maintaining project continuity as a design moves from the sales phase into production.
- Leads the “Sales-to-Engineering” transfer meeting for custom orders to ensure a seamless transition of customer expectations.
- Monitors project progress through the design phase, advocating for the customer regarding schedule adherence, cost management, and technical accuracy.
- Conducts internal reviews of approval drawings and coordinates with vendors to meet quality and budget objectives.
- Partners with Production, Engineering, and Quality Control managers to resolve technical challenges or customer-requested change orders.
Strategic Marketing and Business Growth:
Beyond individual sales, the Sales Engineer contributes to the long-term strategic positioning of Pope Scientific.
- Represents the company at industry trade shows and provides technical expertise for customer-facing presentations.
- Serves as an active member of the Marketing Committee, providing field insights to help shape branding and outreach strategies.
- Participates in quarterly sales forecasting and leadership meetings to assist in defining company growth objectives.
The Ideal Candidate:
The successful candidate will possess a unique blend of engineering aptitude and commercial acumen. Key qualifications include:
- Technical Expertise: A strong background in mechanical or chemical engineering principles, with the ability to interpret complex technical drawings and process specifications.
- Effective Communication: Professionalism in articulating technical solutions to both executive-level stakeholders and plant floor operators.
- Project Ownership: A proactive approach to managing multiple timelines simultaneously while maintaining high standards for accuracy and detail.
- Collaboration: A proven ability to work cross-functionally within a manufacturing environment to solve problems and meet customer benchmarks.
Preferred Qualifications:
Education: BS in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering preferred
Experience and/or Training: ASME pressure vessel fabrication, mixing equipment, solid/liquid separation technology. 5+ years of professional experience preferred.
Technology/Equipment: Software Aptitude: Microsoft Suite, experience with CRM software preferred
Physical & Work Environment Demands:
- The Sales Engineer will primarily operate within a shared office setting, which may include moderate background noise at times.
- The role requires the ability to remain at a desk or in a conference room for several hours per day.
- The ideal candidate will spend time daily standing and working within a manufacturing shop environment to effectively monitor project progress.
- While this is an office-based position, travel is required for approximately 10% of the year.

Mechanical Designer
The role of the Mechanical Designer is to support the Director of Engineering by efficiently completing design and drawing tasks to support projects.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Create CAD drawings, bills of material and revisions for customer approval, vendor quotation, sales proposals, standard part-numbers and internal fabrication/assembly
- Assist in product improvement, cost reduction, design of new products and components
- Initiate purchase requisition for project-related components for “non-stock” orders as well as quality inspection of incoming system components
- Work with the production manager (Director of Operations) to define/monitor critical dates. Notify purchasing if a part is to be expedited and notify the Production Manager of any problems/issues immediately.
- Assist Sales Personnel in obtaining cost estimates for special system components/fabrications
- Participate in project meetings and activities as required, such as project kick-off meetings, design review, equipment testing and inspection, progress meetings, etc.
- Aid manufacturing efforts with drawings, information flow, testing, hands-on work where applicable
- Communicate when necessary with customers for technical assistance, information transfer, etc.
- Assist the QC department in acquiring documentation for customer manuals.
- Assist the Director of Engineering on an as-needed basis to meet company objectives.
- Perform all above duties in a manner consistent with company policies and procedures.

This person should be able to keep various project files organized and managed according to the Pope engineering protocol. In addition, there should be a good technical background on various mechanisms so that designs are completed in a feasible, efficient way.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Associate’s Degree in Mechanical Design/Drafting.
Experience: 1-2 years
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:
Physical: Lifting 50 lbs.
Mental: Minor stress in meeting deadlines and/or dealing with vendors
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
